JOB
The question is: What is he waiting for?
He was, the Holy Book tells us, a perfect and upright man, one who feared God, and eschewed evil. He was married and had seven sons, three daughters, seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a very great number of servants: he was the greatest of all the men of the East. Even though the good fellow would not have hurt a fly, he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of members of his household, just in case one of his children had sinned and cursed God in the heart. “Better to be safe than sorry,” Job would say. And so the days and the nights went by pleasantly for Job in his contented old age, surrounded by his family and his cattle, from feast to happy feast and from sacrifice to grateful sacrifice.
